2A – Bug List
What: Getting in a hot car when it is 120 degrees in the
Florida heat
Why: People are too lazy to put up sunshade or it is too
much work. Maybe an automatic sunshade when you lock car would be helpful and
air conditioning 10 minutes prior to entrance activated by your phone!
What: Finding healthy desserts
Why: While healthy food is taking off, people haven’t taken
healthy desserts to the next level! If I want to eat a healthy meal, I should
be able to have a healthy dessert after.
What: Finding dog poop everywhere around my house
Why: People are too lazy to pick up the poop and think they
can get away with it. Have the issue be considered littering and issue tickets!
What: School is too focused on tests
Why: Create more emphasis on homework and meaningful group
projects. Hard to do at UF with 800 online students but there are ways to
utilize technology to work around this. ENT is a great example.
What: Grocery stores are too expensive
Why: Food prices have been rising well above inflation for a
variety of supply and demand reasons. Maybe create a wholesale local farmer
direct to consumer app.
What: People do not know how to fix up older used cars that
they buy.
Why: Old cars have old forums and outdated information. For
a non-car guy to figure out which rims fit his used Bimmer he has to go through
a tedious process. Have a centralized website to source parts and ideas from
car owners with instructional videos.
What: I hate that there are bugs all around and in my house
Why: I live near a wooded area and Gainesville has many,
many bugs. I have placed bug traps around the house, but they don’t always
work.
What: People are always on their phones
Why: Technology is shown to be addicting in many respects
and people live in a constant desire state. Having more awareness and making
apps less addicting is a step in the right direction.
What: When people develop certain properties in Gainesville
they get rid of all trees
Why: Creates more space for buildings to profit. Make them
plant more trees around the city or mandatory park in the space.
What: The DMV/others still require checks
Why: America is one of the few countries with checks still
around. Checks are expensive, and I never have them with me! America should
move to a checkless society.
What: Going out is expensive as a student
Why: Hard to work full time and get paid well in Gainesville
and restaurants here aren’t that cheap. It would be nice to have more student
discounts, which we have seen with different student apps.
What: Working out alone is not fun
Why: Hard to stay motivated. Have a website with every
sport/event in GNV.
What: Finding good/original music to listen to
Why: Playlists on Apple/Spotify are too basic. Needs more
AI/machine learning. Also, more focus on up and coming bands.
What: I never have an umbrella when it actually rains
Why: Most people don’t have space for an umbrella or simply
forget.
What: People don’t know what they want to do for careers
Why: While other countries have career talks in high school,
we don’t push decisions until late in college.
What: People do not save for retirement
Why: People are short-sighted, spend in the short-term for
satisfaction and fail to plan for downside scenarios.
What: There are homeless people in GNV
Why: Maybe there is a lack of shelters or a blind eye to the
problem.
What: Waiting in lines at midtown bars
Why: People tend to go out at certain times and on certain
days all at once.
What: Waiting at restaurants for 45 minutes and no
reservations!
Why: Certain restaurants feel they have the clout to
maintain their clients with no reservation policies. Create a VIP list and
treat me how I should be treated.
What: Not being home with dog
Why: I can’t bring dogs everywhere. Maybe have a list of
places dog can go or have a video camera for dog.
Reflection: I definitely found it difficult to come up with
20 things that bother me. I had to stop and come back to this several times.
However, I enjoyed the exercise because I noticed myself thinking about
problems throughout the day.
Hello Grant,
ReplyDeleteI would say the top three bugs you listed I can relate to that I didn't think of was the hot car, bugs in the house (my apartment has an ant problem and pest control coming twice hasn't fixed it), and the lines for places in Midtown at night are crazy. I agree with you that it was difficult to think of 20 specific problems. Do you think that after doing this exercise we will look at the world and the problems we face more as opportunities?
Hello Sydney,
DeleteThank you for your feedback on the three things you didn't think of but can relate to. I certainly think that this helps me look at things in a more opportunistic light vs. a pessimist complaining about a problem. For example, when lines are long at midtown I usually complain and leave. But one of my friends' buddy decided to create the app FOMO to give an accurate depiction of waiting times at different bars/restaurants. Hopefully, I will be able to think about solving problems going forward.
Grant, I really enjoyed reading your blog post. While I agree with many of your bugs, I have to disagree with your point about not being able to find enough healthy dessert options. I am from Houston, and honestly, it gets on my nerves how many healthy options there are (especially frozen yogurt). Thats a completely subjective opinion, but it is always interesting to see how people can have such different opinions on the smallest things.
